On June 29, the leaders of Canada, the United States and Mexico will meet in Ottawa for their (sometimes) annual summit. The good rapport among Justin Trudeau, Barack Obama and Enrique Peña Nieto will make for a convivial meeting, but hopes for a strong continental alliance have withered over the years. Given Canada’s imposition of visas on Mexican travellers, the anti-NAFTA rhetoric emerging from the American presidential race and the countries’ differing environmental interests, is the idea of the “Three Amigos” even relevant anymore?
